In her second case, Emma Vaughan, a homicide inspector in Sligo, on Ireland's rainy north-west coast, has to deal not only with her past, but also with the present. An old, unsolved case seems to be breaking her career, and to make matters worse, her boss sends her to the hospital for a drug screening. But the chief physician is more interested in the inspector than in the patient Emma: a noticeable number of patients have been dying recently. Emma begins to investigate, but no one seems to be able or willing to give her any information. When another murder occurs, Emma realizes that she is dealing with an old acquaintance.
